Project: Lockwood Lane Bridge Replacement
General Contractor: Kenefick Corporation
Engineer: Bayside Engineering, Inc
Contact for Project Related Concerns: Chris Olbrot, PE, Town Engineer/DPW Superintendent 978-352-6555, colbrot@boxfordma.gov
Project Overview: In December of 2018, the State conducted an inspection of the bridge and found it to be structurally deficient. In the interest of public safety, the bridge was closed on the State’s recommendation. Through 2019 the Town worked with the state to re-prurpose both ch. 90 funding to fund the design and permitting and State Small Bridge funds ($500,000) to supplement construction costs. The design and permitting was completed in late fall and early winter with a Bid Award in January. The lowest responsible bidder was Kenefick Corporation at a bid price of $823,655. In order to fund the remaining shortfall of funds a Special Town Meeting was held and the project fully funded.
Scope of Work Anticipated Schedule: Tentatively March – August, subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances such as but not limited to COVID-19.
Scope of Work: The project consists of a complete bridge replacement utilizing cast in place reinforced concrete wing walls and abutments, prestressted concrete deck beams reinforcing a poured concrete deck and all associated work such as but not limited to, guard rail installation, paving project limits, utility relocation and stream bed restoration to meet MA-Stream Crossing Standards. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Construction Update - 11/6/20
We are pleased to announce that by 4:00 PM Today, Friday November 6th, the Lockwood Lane Bridge over Fish Brook will officially be opened to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic. First responders, solid waste, and the school transportation services have been notified, and we urge residents to speak to private vendors and let them know of this opening as well.
It should be noted, the town is working with the contractor on a few general punch list items to close out the project completely. One of those items will require a partial road closure for a period of 1-2 days in the coming weeks. An exact date has not been set yet. It is expected that alternating traffic and a detail officer will be utilized as traffic mitigation for that work.
We would like to thank your residents for their continued patience throughout this project duration. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Chris Olbrot, DPW Superintendent/Town Engineer at 978-352-6555 or colbrot@boxfordma.gov. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Construction Update - 9/2/20 Please be advised, that as of August 26th, the subcontractor began casting the prestressed bridge beams. The beams need to cure and be inspected and ensure specification compliance prior to acceptance by the Town and delivered to the site. The delivery is tentatively scheduled for September 16th. The contractor is scheduled to resume work at the site on or about this time as well. Once the beams are installed, National Grid must relay the new gas main, prior to the contractor pouring the “cast in place” bridge deck. Once the bridge deck is poured, cured and accepted by the Town, the remaining work will be completed.
The town is working to expedite this process as quickly as possible while maintaining adequate Quality Assurance and Quality Control measures. We are currently on schedule to open the bridge this construction season. We thank you for your continued patience in this important project. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Construction Update - 6/26/20 The contractor has made significant progress on the bridge replacement. The contractor has installed both bridge footings and abutments. Unfortunately, due to the COVID crisis, critical bridge components were delayed in being manufactured. The bridge components are bearing plates that connect the bridge deck beams to the abutments. The town and design engineer looked at alternatives, however this was still the quickest and most cost effective solution. The updated construction schedule is below. We understand the significant impact this has on the residents and appreciate your continued patience as we move towards project completion.
